In many situations, you may not want to have all the formulas change as
they move to new cell addresses.  Using
$
 signs ensures that the cell
address doesn't change.  This is called
Absolute Cell Addressing.
For example, a new formula
(+B5/$G$5)
 has been entered into cell B6
which computes the percent of total profit for Natural Gas.
A similar formula will be used in cells C6 through F6.  When B6 is copied,
the numerator of the formula (B5) will be changed to C5, then to D5, and
so on, but the denominator (G5=TOTAL PROFIT) will remain the same.

been written relative to the cell locations -- while the denominators
remain absolutely the same.
